Hello, I’m Samantha!
I’m currently a stay at home mum (taking quite a few years off from nursing). I love being a mum. I have two boys and a girl (all under the age of 5). I have been happily married for 8 years (but together for 16 years) now to my husband who often wonders why my hobby is so expensive, but wonderfully supports and encourages it anyways! In what little spare time I have I create cards! I’ve always been a creative person – so I find real joy in making cards not necessarily for anyone but because it allows me to express myself creatively and even emotionally. It’s very relaxing at the end of a crazy day to just sit down (in the quiet) and concentrate on nothing else but colour combos and stamp placement.
Creativity aside I also enjoy playing netball – which is really good as I tend to snack (sweet tooth!) during my craft time and I also enjoy cooking and baking! My favourite colour is Grey (I’m pretty sure that grey is classified as a shade of black rather than a colour) and my family shares our home and our hearts with Ellie (our Labrador X Retriever) not so little pup (8 years old – but still a pup at heart).
I would describe my craft space as organised chaos. Everything has a spot, nothing is labeled, with everything just within arm’s reach. I love my shelf unit – it was a recent purchase and a much needed one as you can see it is already quite full. I’d love to buy another except that on the opposite side of the room is a couch – it’s there because there is nowhere else to put it! It’s the one thing I dislike about my craft room…which is technically the formal dining room! I’m not complaining (much…) I have a dedicated space that’s all mine (minus the space the couch takes up) and because I’ve been doing this – creating, for as long as I can remember I have been able to collect what I’d call essential items to create the cards I now can create. Being a room of organized chaos the one thing I always do is tidy up afterwards – this generally avoids toddler like tantrums when items such as scissors can’t be found!
I hope to have my dream craft room one day (sooner than later if possible) but for now this space will have to do.
A long time ago…in a galaxy far away…
Okay – it wasn’t that long ago (11yrs ago to be precise) and to put it down on a map I was living in Brisbane, Queensland Australia at the time. We had just moved states and I was utterly bored! That’s how I started…it was coming up Christmas and I wanted to make some calendars and cards for my family back home. I found a scrapbook shop, bought some stamps, inks and paper and that my crafty friends is when this now addict found her passion for all things paper craft.
My very first projects were scrapbook pages – mostly of the time we had spent in Brisbane. Throughout the years I moved on to mixed media, making invitations, tags, off the page/art deco stuff, project life (apparently not my thing!), sewing and quilling (both also not my thing!). Now I pretty much just make cards.
But to showcase my creative journey, the first image below is a scrapbook page of my earlier years (probably around 9 years ago now) but if I knew where I kept my very first scrapbook album they’d have a very 90s, retro, mosaic feel to them.
My style has change and adapted quite a lot over the years – a few things have remained constant. I LOVE white and kraft card. Clean and Simple is how I’d describe my style now – though if I make the time, I do love colouring large images and I don’t mind making a complex card every now and then. I get a thrill when I am able to take one stamp set and create 4-6 cards with it – does that sound weird? I don’t really have a favourite technique – but I do like repetitive stamping and finding a way to stamp the images in a pattern on my card. If I see a pineapple or cactus stamp I will always buy it and not necessarily create a card with it… (Okay! – now that sounds a little weird!).
I definitely look forward to seeing what creative journey being part of the Ink Road design team will take me and can’t wait to share some cards and techniques with you all!
